RATIONALE
Why Wide Field Surveys?
During the last couple of decades, surveys have played a key role in our understanding of astrophysics. The time-domain surveys for supernovae have ended up in the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe which was awarded the Nobel prize for physics in 2009. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has provided a vast amount of knowledge in both galactic and extragalactic astronomy. Finally, the second data release of Gaia represents a before and after for our understanding of the Milky Way (and for the way to deal with a large amount of data).
The 2020s promise to follow this trend. A series of wide field surveys are either in progress or about to start, covering a wide range of science topics. These projects are mostly ground based and have different technical aspects, from photometry (J-PLUS, S-PLUS, J-PAS,…) to spectroscopy (SDSS, DESI,) to time-domain (LSST, SDSS, CHiCaS, J-VAR,…). Space based surveys (eROSITA, Euclid and WFIRST) are also planned or starting, as well as ground based projects going well beyond optical/near-infrared like SKA or CTA. This school aims at providing the students with an understanding of the technical complexity of this kind of projects (from the design of the instrumentation to the delivery of science-ready data) as well as their main science drivers and, most importantly, the tools to take advantage of these projects.
