Título/Title: A little knowledge is a dangerous thing: galaxy formation and photometric redshift surveys

Resumo/Abstract:

The next generation of large-scale structure surveys will provide large numbers of photometric rather than spectroscopic redshifts. I will describe algorithms which allow such surveys to provide precise estimates of the luminosity function as well as galaxy scaling relations, which in turn constrain and inform galaxy formation models. In addition, I will use the MgII absorbers in the SDSS to show what can be done if spectra are available for a small subset of the objects.
