Gemini Observatory (CHILE)

Título/Title: The Gemini Multi Object Spectrograph (GMOS)

Resumo/Abstract:

This seminar will discuss the principal characteristics of the GMOS and

a science case: GMOS Observations of Strong Gravitational-Lensing features in

Abell 3827 (z~0.1).

The Gemini Multi Object spectrograph is one of the most used instrument

at Gemini. An optimal use of this facility instrument requires a better

knowledgement of its capabilities (observing modes, reductions techniques

using the gmos package). The two days seminar will be divided as follow:

Wednesday 14th: during the first hour I will review the main characteristics

of the instrument and will show the discovering of features due to strong

gravitational lensing of background sources near the center of the cluster

Abell 3827 (z~0.1) based on GMOS-S observations obtained in 2007B

semester. The second hour will be devoted to GMOS data format and

GMOS data reduction techniques, including the brief introduction to the

Gemini Mask Making Software.
