New evidence shows that many newborn stars are multiple. Such systems
are dynamically unstable and rapidly disintegrate. When one member is
ejected, two of the remaining stars form a tight binary in a highly
eccentric orbit. At periastron, the binary members dissipate energy
through disk-disk collisions, and thus produce powerful outflow
activity, resulting in the spectacular Herbig-Haro jets. If a member
is ejected shortly after birth, before it has accumulated enough mass
to exceed the hydrogen burning limit, it will form a brown dwarf.
